a picturesque Spanish colonial town, and then to
the Acjanacu pass at 3850-m. a. s. l., which marks
the beginning of the Cultural Zone of Manu Biosphere
Reserve. We continue our bus trip through the Cloud
Forest, here a thick cloak of clouds provides perpetual
humidity and makes an ideal habitat for epiphytic
plants such as bromeliads. This varied and fascinating
world is home of the Cock of the Rock, Spectacled
Bear, Orchids, Tree Ferns (one of the oldest living
plants), mosses and lichens. This Cloud Forest exists

and at about 5:00AM as many as several dozens come
together for an exhibition of a ritual mating dance
in a place called Lek. The males display their crest,
showing off and posturing for the females. The females,
fewer in number, watch to select the most suitable
males. After breakfast we continue in our transport

toward Pilcopata town (*). A 30 minutes bus ride
to the Port of Atalaya where we will take our motorized
boat and start going down stream the Alto Madre
de Dios River to our Private Reserve of Erika Lodge
where we will spend the next two nights. Here we
will hike through the interesting trail system that
this low Amazon jungle offers. Overnight in the
lodge.

MANU WILD LIFE CENTER 5-DAYS
CUZCO / MANU / CUZCO
( best season: April through October)
( leaving every thursday )
- Day
1 CUZCO / BOCA MAMU / WILDLIFE CENTER
Early transfer from your hotel to the airport.
A thirty-five minute flight in a radar-equipped
twin engine plane takes you to Boca Manu. Here you
take a motorized canoe for the 90 minute journey
down the Madre de Dios River to Manu Wildlife Center
to arrive for lunch. The afternoon will be spent
exploring some of the 30 miles of clean forest trails
that surround the lodge. On these trails you have
an excellent chance to encounter some of the 12
species of monkeys, which include the Monk Saki
and Emperor Tamarin, which inhabit the surrounding
forest.
After dinner we will leisurely hike for 60-75 minutes
through the night to the Amazon's largest known
Tapir clay lick. We climb up a 17 foot observation
platform perched 17 feet above the lick itself where
we wait for the lumbering Tapirs to arrive, then
using powerful flashlights we observe and photograph
them in action.
- Day
2
Rising before dawn, we take a 25 minute boat journey
downstream to the only large parrot and macaw clay
lick in the Manu area. From a floating catamaran
blind we are afforded excellent views and photo
opportunities as first hundreds of medium-sized
and large parrots, and then the large Red-and-Green
Macaws arrive to eat the clay. Please note that
the clay lick is not as active in May, June and
July. Returning for lunch, the afternoon is spent
visiting one of the two oxbow lakes found in the
area. These lakes have populations of a variety
of water birds, including the prehistoric-looking
Hoatzin, and also house Giant Otters.
After dinner back at the Center there will be another
opportunity to visit the Tapir clay lick.
Day 3
Rising at dawn we will explore the forest trails
with the emphasis on visiting the fruiting trees
which our researchers and native guides have been
monitoring. Here we will hope to encounter more
monkey species as well as numerous species of birds.
Or, we will have an early visit to one or both of
the lakes before exploring the forest trails.
After lunch at the Center there will be a further
opportunity to explore more of the forest types
which can be found in the vicinity of the lodge.
Alternatively, some visitors may wish to spend time
in special blinds to observe and perhaps to photograph
the brilliantly colored dancing birds called manakins.
After dinner, those particularly determined visitors
can once again visit the tapir clay lick.
Day 4
Rising early, we board the motorized canoe for a
25 minute journey to the mouth of the Blanco River.
Here we transfer to dugout canoes where our native
guides will paddle us up this beautiful small tributary
of the River Madre de Dios. As we paddle up the
river we will look for monkeys feeding in the liana-festooned
trees which loom overhead, and will encounter numerous
waterbirds including probable sightings of the cumbersome
Horned Screamers. Those lucky explores might also
meet giant otters, or the smaller southern river
otter, swimming upstream on a fishing expedition.
After lunch at the Center there will be an opportunity
to observe life in the forest canopy from one of
our 35-metre tree platforms, or to independently
explore one of the numerous forest trails.
After supper, those explores still with enough energy
will have a chance for a final visit to the Tapir
clay lick.
Day 5 WILD LIFE CENTER / BOCA MANU / CUZCO
After a dawn breakfast you will board the motor
canoe for the two hour return trip to the Manu landing
strip, from which you fly to Cusco, where your jungle
adventure ends.

and canyons toward the town of Atalaya. Here, we
board our covered, outboard motor boat and head
down the Alto Madre de Dios River for approximately
15 minutes toward our private reserve of "Erika"
where we will hike through the interesting trail
system that this transitional area between high
jungle and low jungle offers. Overnight in the lodge.
- DAY
03 (tue): ERIKA LODGE / BOCA MANU / LIMONAL BY BOAT
& JUNGLE HIKE
After breakfast we board our canoe for the three-hour
trip down the Alto Madre de Dios River to Shepitiari
Native Community that we are going to visit. Boca
Manu village is the last place where you can buy
your last fresh supplies and cold drinks before
setting off again in the canoe. Now we enter the
Manu River and the Reserved Zone, stopping at Limonal
where we camp along the riverbank at the Park Rangers
Headquarters. Short walk around the area.
- DAY
04 (wed): LIMONAL / SALVADOR LAKE
After registering in the official tourist logbook
and eating an early breakfast, we follow the Manu
River until we arrive to Salvador Lake, our base
campsite (screened dining room, bathrooms, radio
communication is available). This canoe ride gives
us the opportunity to observe the immensity of the
rainforest and the diversity of birdlife, reptiles
and mammals. You will often see animals sunning
themselves on beaches, or foraging for food in the
trees lining the riverbanks. We arrive early in
the afternoon and have lunch before setting off
on a jungle trail. Our time is spent looking for
wildlife inside the rainforest and on Salvador Oxbow
Lake, until the sun goes down and we return to camp.
We explore Salvador Lake by paddling quietly along
on a catamaran, giving us the opportunity to observe
unique species of birds, monkeys, caimans and with
luck the Giant Otter (Pteronura brasiliensis). This
endangered species can be seen swimming, fishing,
eating and playing.
-
DAY 05 (thu): SALVADOR / OTORONGO SALVADOR
We rise early in the morning, as the forest is awakened
by the Red Howler monkey (Aloatta seniculus) declaring
its territory. A morning walk before breakfast is
a great way to catch wildlife in the pursuit of
food, and the temperature is very pleasant at this
time of day. After relaxing and swimming in the
river we enjoy lunch along the riverbank, after
this, we cross the river to walk an 8-km trail to
another oxbow lake called Otorongo. A strategically
located observation tower rises 15 meters above
the lake and the jungle floor, giving us more chances
to observe wildlife including the Giant Otter. Late
in the afternoon we will use the catamaran and with
the help of flashlights we can observe the black
caimans rise from the depths of the lake and begin
their search for prey. Return to the campsite.
- DAY
06 (fri): SAVADOR LAKE / BLANQUILLO
Once again we wake up early, enjoy a brief morning
walk, eat a relaxing breakfast, then pack up camp
and descend the Manu River until Boca Manu. This
village is situated a short distance from the confluence
of the Manu River with the Alto Madre de Dios River,
from here we descend the Madre de Dios River. Early
in the afternoon after three hours we camp on a
beach and spend one more night in this magical amazon
jungle.
- DAY
07 (sat): BLANQUILLO / BOCA MANU
After a very early wake up, we board a camouflaged
catamaran and go down the river to the "Collpa"
macaw lick. We quietly observe the various parrots
feeding on the clay for mineral and salt supplements
to their diet of seeds and fruits. The brightly
colored macaws usually wait patiently in the surrounding
trees until the smaller parrot species have left
the area. Slowly, the macaws come down to the clay
wall to feed. We need a lot of patience and silence
on the catamaran so as not to disturb them as they
eat the clay. Continue up the Alto Madre de Dios
River to camp on an appropriate beach in the Cultural
Zone and enjoy the sites and sounds of the jungle
for one last night.
- DAY
08 (sun): CAMP / ATALAYA / CUZCO BY BOAT & OVERLAND
VEHICLE
Waking up very early, we continue the trip by boat
to Atalaya, where the bus will be waiting for us
and drive back up and out of Manu, arriving in Cusco
very late this night or the next early morning.
END OF OUR SERVICES.

6 DAYS JUNGLE CRUISE EXPEDITION
PACAYA - SAMIRIA NATIONAL RESERVE
Arca Iquitos - Iquitos
Departs: Sunday 11:00 AM
Arrives: Friday PM
( Fixed departures: selected and scheduled dates must
be cheked with us)
- The
reflection of hundreds of snow-white Great Egrets
flashes off of the black-glass lake. Large flights
of ducks take wing amongst the egrets. Not far from
the boat pink dolphins surface briefly. Kingfishers
skim along the shore line in search of breakfast.
In the distance pairs of macaws call out with their
distinctive "screech."
As our small boat moves slowly along, troops of monkeys
are seen swinging through the trees. Our guide spots
a pair of sloths high up in a Cecropia tree. Birds
of all sizes and colors flit through the air. Colorful
groups of butterflies hover near the undergrowth on
shore.
This is the "Espejo de la Selva" - the
mirror of the jungle - the Pacaya-Samiria National
Reserve of Peru. The largest reserve in the country
encompasses 2,080,000 hectares (5,139,680 acres) between
the Marañon and Ucayali Rivers. This protected
area contains 85 lakes which are home to 250 species
of fish as well as both pink and gray fresh-water
dolphins. In the jungle and flooded forest of the
reserve 132 mammal species (13 of which are primates),
449 bird species and 150 reptile and amphibian species
have been documented.
There are three distinct eco-systems in the Pacaya-Samiria
Reserve and the largest variety of flora in Peru,
including 22 species of orchids.
The area originally set aside in 1940 became a National
Reserve in 1972. A number of ranger stations were
set up to enforce Reserve laws and monitor wildlife.
The objectives of the Reserve are to foster research
and protection for all species of wildlife, foster
socioeconomic help for the local people and utilization
of resources and tourism. Nature Conservancy of Peru
plays a major role in meeting these goals. One of
their more successful programs is the protection of
taricaya and charapa turtle eggs and conservation
of these endangered species. To date they have released
450,000 turtle hatchlings.
Tourism plays an important role in that it brings
in funds through an entrance fee that helps support
the various programs and promotes awareness of the
wildlife and plant resources within the reserve and
the need for its continued protection.
A visit into the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve is
not soon forgotten.
- Day
01. (sun):
Departure from Iquitos for cruise up the Amazon River.
Sail out of this jungle town isolated in a vast green
jungle, past small villages and agricultural settlements
stretching along the banks. In the evening pass the
juncture of the Ucayali and Marañon Rivers
that in reality form the Amazon River. Continue up
the Ucayali River for overnight.
- Day
02. (mon):
Mid-morning shore excursion to visit a remote riverside
village, a sleepy village little changed over the
last 50 years. Continue upriver now in a greatly reduced
flow of water.
- Day
03. (tue):
Enter the black waters of the Pacaya River at the
ranger station. An entrance fee helps protect this
preserved natural area. Now our ship reduces speed
as regulations require us to move through this nature
area without disturbing it. A full day of viewing
and experiencing this mystic area of nature.
- Day
04. (wed):
We move deeper into this protected reserve. Now there
are no people living in this area, only the reserve's
rangers and a vast variety of birds, fish and fauna.
Sunrise and sunsets are particularly active times
for the inhabitants here. Several species of monkeys
and sloths will be seen and bird watching is at its
best. The waters have many active fish, caiman as
well as the giant "river lobo"(otter). In
the evening catch a few fish for the dinner table
(peacock bass, arahuana, dorado and piranha).
- Day
05. (thu):
The un-ending show around your riverboat continues.
Our small shore boats will take you off to hidden
undisturbed still-water lakes. Stop on the banks for
a visit to the dense and varied flora of this still
uncut jungle forest. Late afternoon begin downriver
return. Cocktail party and closing remarks by the
guides.
-
Day
06. (fri):
Arrive in Iquitos after lunch onboard. Disembark
and transfer to your hotel or to the airport.
