  • A nutritious camp breakfast prepares us for today's challenging trek along the narrow Llullucha gorge and over the first pass on the trail. We hike through dense forest encountering abundant bird life and flowering plants before reaching the open meadows of Llulluchapampa. The final approach to the high pass begins here with a long, steep ramp leading to Warmiwanusca (13,780'). At the top, the views of the surrounding peaks and verdant forest canopy are spectacular. The trail then descends steeply and passes through a meadow rife with lakes, waterfalls and Andean wildflowers. We cross the Runkurakay 035P-FotoFolletoMachuPicchu.jpg (26925 bytes)
Pass (12,631') enjoying excellent views of the glacier-clad peaks of the Pumasillo mountains and deep gorges of the eastern Andes, and then descend gradually through a unique ecological zone - a high jungle transition area rich in plant and animal life. After entering the cloud forest, our route takes us past the ruins of Sayacmarca and then through a natural tunnel elaborated on by the Incas. This portion of the trail is well paved with Inca stonework and leads us to the spectacular area at Phuyupatamarca descending to Wiñaywayna for camping. Meals included.
  • Day 3 / WIÑAYWAYNA - MACHUPICCHU - CUSCO

CUZCO / MANU / CUZCO
( best season: April through October)
( daily departures )

  • DAY 01: CUZCO / SAN PEDRO BY OVERLAND VEHICLE

We leave Cusco early in the morning in our specialized overland vehicle. Approximately at mid-morning we visit the interesting tombs of Ninamarca, commonly known as "Chullpas". We continue to Paucartambo, a picturesque Spanish colonial town, and then to the Acjanacu pass at 3850-m. a. s. l., which marks the beginning of the Cultural Zone of Manu Biosphere Reserve. We continue our bus trip through the Cloud Forest, here a thick cloak of clouds provides perpetual humidity and makes an ideal habitat for epiphytic plants such as bromeliads. This varied and fascinating world is home of the Cock of the Rock, Spectacled Bear, Orchids, Tree Ferns (one of the oldest living plants), mosses and lichens. This Cloud Forest exists between 2000 and 3500 meters above sea level, and at least 50% of the plant species found here are endemic to this region. The male birds are a vibrant reddish orange, and at about 5:00AM as many as several dozens come together for an exhibition of a ritual mating dance in a place called Lek. The males display their crest, showing off and posturing for the females. The females, fewer in number, watch to select the most suitable males. After breakfast we continue in our transport down the narrow road between waterfalls and canyons toward Pilcopata town (*). A 30 minutes bus ride to the Port of Atalaya where we will take our motorized boat and start going down stream the Alto Madre de Dios River to our Private Reserve of Erika Lodge where we will spend the next two nights. Here we will hike through the interesting trail system that this low Amazon jungle offers. Overnight in the lodge.

(*) Optional: Here in Pilcopata town we will make all the final settings for a 3 hour rafting trip down the Kosñipata river where we will have the oportunity for a dip. Continuing down the Alto Madre de Dios river to Erika Lodge.

After this we will take the boat to Atalaya where the bus takes us back up and out of Manu, arriving in Cusco late in the afternoon. END OF OUR SERVICES.

MANU WILD LIFE CENTER 5-DAYS
CUZCO / MANU / CUZCO
( best season: April through October)
( leaving every thursday )

  • Day 1 CUZCO / BOCA MAMU / WILDLIFE CENTER

Early transfer from your hotel to the airport.
A thirty-five minute flight in a radar-equipped twin engine plane takes you to Boca Manu. Here you take a motorized canoe for the 90 minute journey down the Madre de Dios River to Manu Wildlife Center to arrive for lunch. The afternoon will be spent exploring some of the 30 miles of clean forest trails that surround the lodge. On these trails you have an excellent chance to encounter some of the 12 species of monkeys, which include the Monk Saki and Emperor Tamarin, which inhabit the surrounding forest.
After dinner we will leisurely hike for 60-75 minutes through the night to the Amazon's largest known Tapir clay lick. We climb up a 17 foot observation platform perched 17 feet above the lick itself where we wait for the lumbering Tapirs to arrive, then using powerful flashlights we observe and photograph them in action.

  • Day 2

Rising before dawn, we take a 25 minute boat journey downstream to the only large parrot and macaw clay lick in the Manu area. From a floating catamaran blind we are afforded excellent views and photo opportunities as first hundreds of medium-sized and large parrots, and then the large Red-and-Green Macaws arrive to eat the clay. Please note that the clay lick is not as active in May, June and July. Returning for lunch, the afternoon is spent visiting one of the two oxbow lakes found in the area. These lakes have populations of a variety of water birds, including the prehistoric-looking Hoatzin, and also house Giant Otters.
After dinner back at the Center there will be another opportunity to visit the Tapir clay lick.

    Day 3

Rising at dawn we will explore the forest trails with the emphasis on visiting the fruiting trees which our researchers and native guides have been monitoring. Here we will hope to encounter more monkey species as well as numerous species of birds. Or, we will have an early visit to one or both of the lakes before exploring the forest trails.
After lunch at the Center there will be a further opportunity to explore more of the forest types which can be found in the vicinity of the lodge. Alternatively, some visitors may wish to spend time in special blinds to observe and perhaps to photograph the brilliantly colored dancing birds called manakins.
After dinner, those particularly determined visitors can once again visit the tapir clay lick.

    Day 4

Rising early, we board the motorized canoe for a 25 minute journey to the mouth of the Blanco River. Here we transfer to dugout canoes where our native guides will paddle us up this beautiful small tributary of the River Madre de Dios. As we paddle up the river we will look for monkeys feeding in the liana-festooned trees which loom overhead, and will encounter numerous waterbirds including probable sightings of the cumbersome Horned Screamers. Those lucky explores might also meet giant otters, or the smaller southern river otter, swimming upstream on a fishing expedition.
After lunch at the Center there will be an opportunity to observe life in the forest canopy from one of our 35-metre tree platforms, or to independently explore one of the numerous forest trails.
After supper, those explores still with enough energy will have a chance for a final visit to the Tapir clay lick.

Day 5 WILD LIFE CENTER / BOCA MANU / CUZCO

After a dawn breakfast you will board the motor canoe for the two hour return trip to the Manu landing strip, from which you fly to Cusco, where your jungle adventure ends.
